About ESLP at UCLA

Picture
The Education for Sustainable Living Program is a student-initiated, student-led organization that connects students to the world of sustainability. Run through the Institute of the Environment, the program consists of several components to educate students and involve them in the world of sustainability.

Firstly, the FILM SERIES connects students with local and large-scale topics in sustainability. The LECTURE SERIES brings guest speakers from UCLA and across the country to speak on specialized subjects, including food systems, green business, urban organic agriculture, water accessibility issues, and the green economy, as well as presenting sustainability projects across Los Angeles. Additionally, the ACTION RESEARCH TEAMS open up the world of action-oriented research to UCLA students for their involvement. This year boasts 8 projects spanning the topics of energy and water conservation and waste reduction in the on-campus residence halls to the implementation of recycling throughout the Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology. More than 45 students participated in making this research possible, as well as the institutional changes these projects encourage. Finally, the program contains an outreach component that affords students an opportunity to engage in events that promote community outreach.

The Education for Sustainable Living Program is part of the  California Student Sustainability Coalition (CSSC), a statewide organization that focuses on both sustainability education and advocating for environmental legislation. ESLP has been running at UCLA for five years, and is one of the first campuses to start with the program in 2004. We are currently one of five UC campuses that offer the program. Past speakers at the UCLA campus have included Van Jones of Green for All, Andy Lipkis of TreePeople, and Jules Dervaes of Path to Freedom.
